Five weeks on from first being pushed into the ground, these onion sets are really starting to grow well.

They’re in a raised bed, covered by mesh, so in theory are reasonably protected from harsh winter weather. But it’s so mild here at the moment – mid-December – that the cover is only really keeping birds off.
Some of the sets were ordinary non-winter varieties but i think this mild spell will have given even those a chance to establish good roots, so that they too should be strong and ready to pick in the Spring.
Of course now that I’ve mentioned the mild weather a new ice age will start tomorrow!
