A lotta Shalotta

Shallots in spring
Shallots in spring

It was very good to see the shallots starting to sprout today.  I planted the bulbs three weeks ago and, with some mild weather in recent weeks the first signs of life were due.

They’re under mesh to prevent the local wood pigeons ripping them out, so please excuse the fuzzy photograph.  There are onion sets growing alongside but it’s very easy to know which are which, because the shallots have lots of leaves coming from each bulb as it will split into lots of individual shallots, a bit like the way that garlic grows.
